Rout by Moonlight

When word reached London that SC 7 was under attack, it was agreed that the convoy’s meagre escort force must be reinforced without delay. Ideally, the situation called for destroyers, but all the Admiralty could come up with was a sloop and a corvette. Already at sea were the Grimsby-class sloop HMS Leith and the Flower-class corvette HMS Heartsease, both lightly armed and with a top speed of 16 knots. In command of Leith was Commander Roland Allen, RN, while Heartsease was under the command of Lieutenant Commander Edward North, RNR. Both commanders were experienced in North Atlantic convoy work, but on this occasion neither was fully aware of the situation with SC 7. Commander Allen, who had orders to take over as Senior Officer Escort of SC 7, wrote in his log:
